- Create A Character
Take a clipping from a newspaper or magazine and look at the image or story in detail. Start creating a character for your story from this piece. Say you are looking at an image of an old man. You don’t know his real story so make one up. Give hive him a name, an age, and add some dramatic details about his life. You can also re-write the entire story. Twist the narrative to make it your own, adding in intimate details to completely change the whole piece.
This is a fun activity to get your brain running.
2. Re-Write an Ad
Look at the advertisement on the next billboard you see and think of ways you can improve the message. Try to make the ad spunkier by twisting the slogan. People have short attention spans when it comes to promotional material so focus on how to engage with your audience quickly. For instance, it is recommended that video commercials be under a minute long. Why does this form of advertising need to be so condensed? People want to find what they are looking for right away without having to wait for the information.
If you are an ad writer, this re-writing activity will help you come up with ideas for your next project that is due.
3. Random Creation
When you are out for a walk, write down the first 20 words down that you come across on your walk from random signs or listening to passers-by. Try creating a poem from these words to depict an emotion or scenario you experienced during your outing. It can be rhythmic or free verse; the choice is up to you.
Creating a piece of writing from random words tests your brain’s ability to grow. You really can form a story out of everyday things.
