4 Ways to Grow the Creative Part of Your Brain

If you are a writer like me then you know that creativity is key to your art form but what happens when you are stuck for ideas? No matter what kind of artist you are or if you just need a little inspiration, here are some excellent ways to get your imagination spinning. You might be surprised at the answers.

  1. Walking

Walking boosts your creative juices. According to a study by Stanford University, creative output increased by about 60 percent in people that went for a walk versus those that just sat around. It is not known exactly why walking is so beneficial for our imaginations, but don’t you want to take a stroll to get your writing on?

2. Meditation

You need to rid your mind of negativity if you are to move forward with your imagination. Negative thoughts and self-criticism only create obstacles on your path to free creative thought. Meditation allows you to become self-aware and this lends itself to creativity.

According to a study done by the UCLA School of Medicine, meditation amplifies the corpus callosum (a thick, wide nerve tract of our brain). It is noted that when this part of your brain grows stronger, you are more connected to your creativity. Einstein was known to have a strong corpus callosum. Perhaps that is why he was such a creative genius.

3. Take on a New Project or Task

Have you always wondered whether you can play guitar? Do you wish you knew more about astrology? Discovery plays a huge role in increasing creativity. The more you learn, the more creative you get, especially as you take on new projects or tasks. Creativity doesn’t have to be the destination it can be the adventure.

4. Risk It

Do you like taking risks? If you do then great, if not then maybe it’s time you start! Taking risks can be rewarding not only to feel a positive rush but to build your creativity. Without taking a risk, I would never have gone out on my own as a Freelance Writer. You may fail at some things, but you will always learn from everything you do. When you succeed, your reward can be immense.

I am a risk-taker, having bungy jumped from 50 meters high into beautiful water while in Australia, skydived 12,500 feet from an airplane, and dropped a nearly vertical 215 feet at 89° on the X2 roller coaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain. The rewards were great, the memories greater, but accomplishing something I’ve always dreamt of doing was life changing. The pictures and videos remind me every day that without taking a risk I would never have these experiences that made me so happy. I took the risk and went out on my own as a Freelance Writer.

Take a risk, it’ll be worth it! 😉

Why is creativity so beneficial? It opens your mind to new thoughts and brings out your innovative capabilities. If you are a writer, then these benefits help you think up new story ideas and resolve conflicts in your writing that you may otherwise have skipped over.
