I love theatre, always have. There is something about watching a play that gets you feeling as though you are a part of everything happening on stage. With live theatre, you connect with every little emotion expressed on the faces of the actors and are drawn into the scenery with beautifully detailed set designs.
This art form truly allows you to peek into the mind of the playwright for a completely new experience. Become a part of something completely different. Art is expression at its utmost and provides an outlet for everyone to express themselves. So, what plays do I believe are a must-see if you get the chance and why?
- Phantom of the Opera
This world-renowned musical about a phantom and a young soprano is a story of love with the perfect juxtaposition of dark and light. The Phantom of the Opera grabs all of your emotions at every moment, keeping you glued to your chair, waiting for what is about to happen next.
This play truly shows how each of us has good inside and how love can be a crazy whirlwind. It should be seen for these reasons alone but also for the fantastic costume design, musical score, and outstanding performances of the talented cast.
Andrew Lloyd Webber, the musical composer, truly knows how to tie the genius of the script to the artistry of his music. This is the most successful musical for a reason so definitely don’t miss out on it if you have the chance to become part of this intense drama.
2. The Circle
Though not as well-known as a big production like The Phantom of the Opera, this smaller theatrical performance was the rawest I have ever encountered. The Circle is an in-depth look into the lives of a group of teenagers, exposing some of their deepest, darkest moments. Nothing can quite compare to how this show portrays the beauty behind the mess.
Each character is relatable in some way as you empathize with their emotional journeys of life. This play unapologetically shows the impact we have upon each other and depicts stories of the heart which each of us can connect to in our unique way. My heart was taken right into the centre of this drama, unlike any other performance I have seen before.
You might just discover unknown emotion inside of you when you watch this artistic amazement by Geoffrey Simon Brown, now one of my favourite playwrights; see this play and you’ll know why.
Art is so important in our lives. It is an outlet of expression that connects us all. Each of these plays deeply impacted my psyche and this is why their stories have stuck with me today.
Take yourself on a deeply emotional journey into these performances and see what they evoke in yourself.
